NAHB Backs Senate Permitting Reform
Bipartisan legislation could reduce development costs and federal permitting delays.
Federal permitting delays can increase costs, slow development and make it harder to deliver attainable housing. The Senate is expected to consider the NAHB-backed Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act following the midterm elections.
Drafted by a bipartisan group of Senate committee leaders, BAAJA would create faster, more predictable federal reviews. NAHB reports that the legislation could reduce land development costs and delays, support more affordable lots, and make federal permitting faster and less expensive.
The proposal also includes provisions for multifamily builders that could improve access to federal housing finance programs and reduce the cost and delay of environmental reviews involving U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development loans or Community Development Block Grant funding.
NAHB members can help move the legislation forward by calling their U.S. senators through the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121 and urging them to support BAAJA.
