Canadian Tariffs Raise Risks for Washington Exporters
New duties could affect wood products, machinery, paper and seafood beginning Sept. 8.
Washington businesses are assessing the potential impact of new Canadian tariffs scheduled to take effect Sept. 8. Duties ranging from 15% to 50% will apply to certain U.S. products, including industrial machinery, paper and paperboard, seafood, electrical machinery and wood products.
Canada remains one of Washington’s largest export markets. During the first half of 2026, the state exported more than $4 billion in goods to Canada, representing approximately 11% of Washington’s total export sales.
For CWHBA members, the developing trade dispute bears watching because it could affect construction-related products, cross-border supply chains and operating costs. State and industry officials caution that the full impact is not yet clear, but prolonged or expanded tariffs could reduce demand for Washington products and add pressure to businesses already facing higher material, energy and labor expenses.
