WA State Energy Code

Effective March 15, 2024

The 2021 Washington State Energy Code – Residential (WSEC-R) establishes Washington's minimum energy efficiency requirements for residential construction. This resource serves as the primary reference for builders, designers, permit applicants, and code officials working on one- and two-family homes, townhouses, and certain low-rise residential buildings.

Use this document to review requirements related to:

  • Building envelope insulation and air sealing
  • Windows and doors
  • HVAC systems and equipment efficiency
  • Mechanical ventilation
  • Water heating systems
  • Lighting requirements
  • Compliance paths and required documentation
  • Energy credits and additional efficiency measures

The current Second Edition incorporates amendments adopted by the Washington State Building Code Council and became effective March 15, 2024. Always verify local jurisdiction requirements, as some municipalities may have additional policies or administrative procedures.
